Two tiny newborn kittens were discovered on the street, abandoned. When someone saw that their mother was not there, they were taken to a nearby shelter where they would get much-needed care. The Orphan Kitten Club offered to help after hearing the story.
The small ones were looked after by Yige Zhao, coordinator of the rescue center’s satellite nursery. They were fed continuously throughout the day and placed in an incubator to assist control their body temperature.
Frodo, a little kitten who weighed just 77 grams, was the tiniest of the bunch. She quickly recovered, owing to the attention and excellent meals she got at the nursery.
“They were so little that I misidentified them and gave them the names Frodo and Samwise, a dynamic combo from The Lord of the Rings.” I didn’t discover they were both females until a few days later.”
Yige received a call about four orphaned puppies that required special treatment and care just days after the small kittens arrived. Unfortunately, the mother of the puppies, a dog rescued by The Animal Pad, did not make it.
Yige explains:
“The puppies were born prematurely and had a ‘gummy’ appearance due to their underdeveloped fur. Because we had experience with newborn care, they were transferred to the Orphan Kitten Club.”
The kittens were relocated to a cat enclosure after a few days, while the pups were placed to the incubator. The two kittens heard some shrieking in the background during the next few weeks, but they had no idea what it was.
Frodo observed an unusual looking ‘cat’ while playing in the nursery a few weeks later. Ulrich, one of the cubs, was pretty drowsy and napping, and Frodo was afraid to approach him at first, but he eventually made a try and walked over to smell.
Frodo sat next to Ulrich, who was napping, and came over from time to time to investigate him. Frodo regarded the tiny boy’s roll onto his body as an invitation for some hugs.
“Yig” stated:
“She thought it was safe to make friends with him after she understood he was only a small ball of fur.”
Frodo was careful, placing her paw on Ulrich’s stomach before he turned towards her. Finally, after some time had passed, they fell asleep holding hands. Frodo apparently believed the unusual ‘kitten’ needed some love.
After the embrace, the kitty raced over to her sister Sam to inform her about her new buddy.
