When BleuBelle initially joined her family, she slept in her kennel in the kitchen every night next to her dog older sister, Skyler. BleuBelle was so heartbroken after Skyler died last year that she began staying every night in the room Sarah Neath and her sister shared so she wouldn’t be alone.
Neath and her sister received their own rooms when their family relocated to a new house, which they were thrilled about — but they were worried about where BleuBelle would sleep now.
Neath told us, “She adored sleeping on both of our beds, so we tried to maintain things as regular as possible.” “When she wanted us to wake up, she’d jump from one bed to the next, down to the floor, and then begin to perform laps around our room, typically about 4 a.m. She has a ‘donut’ on each of our beds (a blanket folded into a circle with another blanket thrown over it) and enjoys snoozing in it in the early sun.”
The sisters began working together on the project, which took approximately a week to complete, with the support of their parents.
“The constructing phase took approximately a weekend, [during] which my father performed all the cutting/measuring/making the frame that went in the hole to cover the space between the drywall,” Neath said. “Then the painting had to be done over the course of many days.”
They chose to paint the tunnel to appear like a galaxy, and it took a long time to get it just perfect — even BleuBelle tried to assist.
“I guess the only time she was very inquisitive was while we were painting it,” Neath explained. “It’s probably because we were combining on paper plates, and she adores paper.”
The passageway was finally completed, and while BleuBelle was initially perplexed, she quickly grasped what it was for and fell in love with it.
