Mary and Steve Fultz already have an orange tabby cat, which they adore.
“Many of my amazing Facebook friends adore cats, and they put up with me posting images of our guy Morty on a daily basis,” Mary told us.
Then, earlier this month, a friend of Mary’s gave her a photo of two orange tabby kittens from the Fredericksburg SPCA in Fredericksburg, Virginia. “These fellas had me at ‘hello,’” Mary said, adding that she wasn’t planning to acquire another cat.
Fez and Kelso are 12-year-old brothers who have spent their whole lives with each other. They were left at the shelter when their owners had to relocate, and their future together became uncertain.
While the brothers got along well with the other cats in the shelter, they were clearly confused, if not devastated, once their home was destroyed.
Mary and Steve, on the other hand, were on their way to save them.
“We never saw ourselves as a three-cat family,” Mary explained. “However, my husband Steve and I felt that we needed to adopt them because they were brothers.” “‘Are you sure you want them both?’ they said when I arrived to the SPCA and informed them I wanted to adopt them. ‘I could never separate them,’ I blurted out as tears welled up in my eyes.”
“Of course Morty’s whiskers are out of whack,” Mary explained, “but they’re adapting.”
“I’m hoping that people would think about senior pets,” she added. “It’s a little more difficult adjusting to extra litter boxes, food, and toys, but I’d do it all over again.”
